Full Description

MS was set up in 1971.

It currently comprises of seven solicitors, eight legal analysts and seven paralegals. It is headed by Manon Mardemootoo, Senior Attorney and managed by Sivakumaren Mardemootoo.

Mardemootoo Solicitors is multi-disciplinary. In addition to its general practice, it has also developed significant practices in the areas of Banking, Commercial, Corporate, Financial Services, Maritime, Information & Communication Technologies, Property, Competition, Infrastructure and Construction.

The lawyers at Mardemootoo Solicitors are involved in many pro-bono cases as well, in and outside Mauritius. For example, we have been advising, through the Chagos Refugees Group and Louis Olivier Bancoult, the Chagos Islanders since 1997 in their struggle to return to the Chagos Islands (now called British Indian Ocean Territory) and their claim for just and equitable compensation [cf. The Queen Ex Parte Bancoult v. Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs [2000] Q.B 1067 (Admin) and (b) The Queen Ex Parte Bancoult v. Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs [2006] EWHC 1038 (Admin).] We have also been involved in the protection of Mauritius’ last endemic forest by forcing the Government, through litigation, to abandon its highway project that was going to run through the forest; we also litigated pro-bono on a number of other public-interest cases.
